Research Infrastructure EUTRICOD>General Information

European Centre for Training and Research on Imported and Highly Contagious Diseases (EUTRICOD)
supported under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union

The Bernhard Nocht Institute is currently enlarging and upgrading its research facilities both on the premises in Hamburg and at the research centre in Kumasi, Ghana. The European Union co-funds the project with a grant of 2.06 Mio. €.

Central to the project is the erection of an extension building with roughly 3000 sqm lab space. This building is to house state-of-the-art biosafety level (BSL) 3 and 4 laboratories, specific pathogen free animal husbandry and a BSL 3 insectary. BNI is already operating one of Europe´s currently six BSL 4 units.

Secondly, a new negative pressure unit is being built for the Bernhard Nocht clinic, a highly experienced centre for management of highly contagious diseases. Thirdly, BNI´s collaborative research centre in Kumasi, Ghana will be technically upgraded with a BSL 3 laboratory for studies on endemic viruses.

The new BNI facilities will act as an international resource for scientists seeking to conduct a specific project involving BSL3 and BSL 4 handling of pathogens, insect experiments or field studies.

Alongside the progression of constructions this website will provide information on the new facilities and documents for scientists interested in performing research at EUTRICOD.

  1. Laboratory facilities planned in Hamburg (extension building)
  2. Treatment centre for highly contagious diseases
  3. BSL 3 facility at the KCCR in Ghana
  4. Access to the facilities
