OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENT |
 |
 |
In 1914, the Clinical Department followed the Sailors Hospital, the heart
of the former "Institut für Schiffs- und Tropenkrankheiten"
(Institute for Maritime and Tropical Diseases). Up to date, the neighbourhood
of patients and laboratories, which Bernhard Nocht had demanded, is in practice.
While on one hand results of research flow into diagnostics and treatment,
interesting cases on the other hand initiate new research projects. |

Today, the Clinical Department is hospital for
internal medicine with modern equipment including three intensive care
beds with central monitoring of dangerously ill patients. Besides treatment
of internal diseases, there is a special competence in diagnostics and
treatment of imported tropical and other infectious diseases (including
AIDS).
In the out-patient department, physicians
treat patients with urgent health problems 24 hours a day. Additionally,
since the middle of the eighties two psychologists take care of in- and
out-patients.

Two isolation bed systems are reserved for highly
infectious, dangerous diseases (like Lassa fever, Marburg disease or Ebola
fever). If necessary, a complete ward with 20 beds can be isolated. |
 |
 |
Technical equipment includes video-endoscopy,
ECG with ergometry, lung functioning test, X-ray, ultrasound with computer
ultrasonography, routine laboratory and research laboratory. In 1998, the
X-ray equipment was completely renewed. |

In the clinical diagnostic laboratories
haematological parameters, bone marrow differentiation, flow cytometry,
haemostatic parameters and direct parasitological examinations are performed.
|

 |
Clinical
research concentrates on the pathophysiology of malaria and Aids. Physicians
also teach and take part in postgraduate training, giving in lectures and
seminars in the Course for Tropical Medicine, and case presentations. In
addition, examination courses, practical training and lectures for students
of the University of Hamburg are offered. |
