Special regulations: Diagnostics of Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers and SARS
To handle suspected cases of viral haemorrhagic fevers or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the Medical Services Centre offers assistance to hospitals, medical practitioners and laboratories worldwide. Note that samples sent for examination must comply with international regulations for the transport of hazardous material. They have to be announced to the Virus Diagnostics Laboratory because they must be examined in a high-security (BSL-4) laboratory.

A number of inherited disorders causing recurrent fever episodes have been included in the diagnostic repertoire:

  • Familial Mediterranean Fever [FMF]
  • Hyper-IgD and periodic fever syndrome [HIDS]
  • TNF-receptor-associated periodic fever [TRAPS, Hibernian fever]
  • Familial cold urticaria [FCU]
  • Muckle-Wells syndrome [MWS]
  • CINCA syndrome, PAPA syndrome
  • Familial recurrent arthritis [FRA]
