Stanislaus von Prowazek, a zoologist, dies of
typhus while studying an epidemic in a prison camp. The pathologist Henrique
da Rocha-Lima later identifies the causative agent and names the new bacteria
species Rickettsia prowazeki.
1918
Henrique da Rocha-Lima plays a decisive role
in identifying the causative agent of trench fever (Rochalimea quintana,
renamed Borrelia).
August 1921
Financial difficulties threaten the existence
of the institute. Hamburg merchants and prominent citizens found a society
to support the work of the institute financially and politically.
